History of Abuse

Abuse is known as the physical, emotional, verbal or sexual mistreatment of others. It can be tough to engage people who have been victimized due to the trauma that’s occurred and lack of trust they may have in others. For so many, abuse is ongoing and unseen. Perpetrators are often someone they know and can have a threatening presence that instills fear.
Abuse can interfere with your intrapersonal, interpersonal, physical and sexual growth. Moving past abuse is no easy road to go down, but going from victim to survivor and having a thriving future is an achievable goal. It’s difficult to talk about something so horrible that you’ve encountered because it will feel as if you’re re-living the experiences. At Emerge, we work together on how negative feelings have become associated with the abuse and systematically work through your behaviors, cognition, motivation and affect to not only understand the impact and where you currently stand but to begin working towards what goals you’d like to attain for your future.
One of the most important specifics to keep in mind is to make sure the therapist you’re working with is a good fit for you. They should understand your needs and wants and be free of bias so don’t be afraid to ask questions.
